Dead Man Walking: Season 2 – Coming Soon!

S11026742_10153276471774305_1346181733_no it’s been nearly a full year since the first season! I’ve missed you guys! Where have you been?

A lot has happened while I’ve been away, family disputes, being evicted, but worst of all lost my battle with alcohol. I started drinking to excess again, I started getting pretty poorly and then lost access to my son. Luckily I’m back on the old sober train now, I can see my son, and I’m starting to reap the rewards of watching him grow into an amazing/clever/handsome young man with one hell of an appetite for adventure.

The first series was praised for being very ‘honest’, sometimes I think it may have been a bit TOO honest, but this is an autobiographical, adventure documentary. I guess I have to show the world this side, so they can understand the thought processes and eventually the healing process. Hopefully it’s a story people will want to watch.

A lot of people approached me about making a second series but after getting lost on an adventure, and nearly dying from hypothermia (seriously, the coastguard was involved and everything) I decided to have a break. I was getting too cocky, I thought I was indestructible. I’m not.

However… In the deepest, darkest recesses of my mind, I’ve been ITCHING to get back out and do something. Something to save me from the mundanity of my office job and my tiny flat, my routine of eat, sleep, work, repeat, to go outside and live a little! I lay awake at night thinking about it. I NEED to do this. So I started planning series 2…

11008937_10153276471899305_1335181972_n

I’ve spent the best part of a day sorting out my online presence, Twitter/YouTube etc… to transform this dodgy little slap-dash documentary, into a brand. YouTube is a very powerful tool, which is getting bigger and bigger. Fan-bases can be built, money can be made, and audiences seem to like this bizarre editing style I’ve adapted, so hell I’m gonna run with it. It’s mad how a couple of snapchats turned into a full blown TV show made for the internet!

So here we go again. In another attempt to curb a long term battle with my drinking, I’m going outdoors, armed with a couple of cameras and I promise this season will be more over the top, more funny and more honest than ever!

Please follow me on Twitter @thisisdeadman and SUBSCRIBE to foureyez.tv on Youtube to be one of the first to know!

Filming starts on the 10th of March (my birthday) and I will be living homeless on the streets for 2 nights, with no food or water. I can’t wait!!!

See you very, very soon

Dead Man Walking – Episode 4 – Climbing Mount Snowdon

Steve DMWbHi, I’m Steve, I work on sound with Berry Productions and can occasionally be found doing some acting as well! Look out for me in ‘The New Family Corporation’ (at the bottom of this post)! We’re also currently in production of a music video for my new song ‘Mama’ for Cancer UK.

It’s come a long way from a silly Snapchat story, but finally the first series draws to a close with Dead Man Walking episode 4.

This was always going to be the ‘season finale’ as its the biggest challenge (to date). I started planning the Snowdon climb about this time last year. I asked on Facebook if anyone would be interested in joining me, within 24 hours we had assembled a team of 22 people. As time went on people started dropping out for number of reasons which we knew would happen. We were left with a core team of 3 of us, James – a bodybuilder and Kyle (a builder who’s about 7 foot tall)

The views from the top of Mount Snowdon were AMAZING!

This was the first time I’ve filmed a multi camera adventure, so that was fun! It took a lot more thought than expected, shots, headcams, battery life, memory… the list was endless. Trying to piece together the documentary while I was busy climbing a mountain. This is also the first adventure I’ve done with someone from start to finish, I’m used to going at my own pace. These guys were TANKS and I admit, I slowed them down.

After a year of planning, we finally made it to the summit! The feeling of pure elation for me was overwhelming. I had a lump in my throat. A normal group of blokes from Driffield and we were standing on top of a mountain! We were above the clouds. We were standing on top of the world! We’d done it!

From the very start of making this series, I knew it was only going to be a 4-part thing, mainly for lack of ideas/money, but also I didn’t really think anyone would take to it…. I was a bit wrong. I still get at least a couple of people a week asking ‘what’s next’ or ‘when’s the next one’ and the truth is, I don’t know! There are plans in motion for series 2 already, I may start filming in August. It’s really humbling to know people enjoy it, and I’ve had some lovely comments from people regarding the series!

I want to take a moment to thank you all, everyone who watched, shared or read this blog! Also my fellow adventurers, anyone who gave me a bed, lent me equipment or just cheered me on. A special thanks to Joe and Callum from Berry Productions too, for supporting me in this crazy series. Without you none of this would’ve been possible.

Its been a pretty amazing ride! From Snapchat, to Channel 4 being interested! A gentle reminder that anything is possible! I can’t wait to start filming series 2

Thank you all, I’ll see you soon

I’m Steve, and this was Dead Man Walking.

Dead Man Walking – Episode 3

Hi, I’m Steve, I work on sound with Berry Productions and can occasionally be found doing some acting as well! Look out for me in ‘The New Family Corporation’ (at the bottom of this post)! We’re also currently in production of a music video for my new song ‘Mama’ for Cancer UK.

Recently, I’ve  also been documenting my adventures in ‘Dead Man Walking’. Welcome to episode 3!

So…. It’s been a while but I finally had chance to edit episode 3.

This challenge was designed to test me on every single level. It did.

The idea was simple, get blindfolded, taken to an unknown location, with no map, no compass and no phone.

The reality of this challenge set in pretty quickly. I was told to wear a ‘tracker’ on my leg for safety reasons and I had to have some means of communication, which meant strapping an iPhone to my leg with gaffer tape. Two birds, one stone. The phone was unusable , plus it was gaffer taped to my leg so I didn’t WANT to take it off. I couldn’t.

So they blindfolded me and took me to said location. The feeling was nothing like I’d ever had before. I usually know where I am at any given time, how I got there, how to get back. Coupled with having no phone, no map and no real idea where I was, it was really cool. I had nothing leading me back home, but a sense of direction. Proper man stuff!

I was living again!!! away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. Just me, my thoughts and a camera!

I was busy doing a PTC when I fell into a ditch. Not even a big one. Unfortunately I broke the camera when I fell. I hit the grass, my cam hit concrete. My only way of keeping sane on this adventure was talking to the camera, and now it was gone!

I carried on even though I couldnt film anything, but my bruised morale couldn’t take it. I walked around 6-8 miles (google earth says) until I found civilisation and hitch-hiked home. This story pains me, because it didn’t finished the way it should’ve. But I made it home. Thats all that matters.

Cheers for having a skeg at my sweaty blog!

Dead Man Walking – Episode 2

Steve2Hi, I’m Steve, I work on sound with Berry Productions and can occasionally be found doing some acting as well! Look out for me in ‘The New Family Corporation’ (at the bottom of this post)! We’re also currently in production of a music video for my new song ‘Mama’ for Cancer UK.

Recently, I’ve  also been documenting my adventures in ‘Dead Man Walking’. Welcome to episode 2…

So, I’m sitting here a day after launch of episode 2 and the response has been incredible! I never actually expected people to watch it, and to WANT to watch it. Wow!

Filming episode 2, was a lot harder than the first one, because there was a bit more organisation involved. Getting my mates Nick and Chris in on the idea was great because I think it added a whole new dimension to the first 5 mins.

Filming the night vision stuff was great fun, albeit scary. The only problem I faced in the editing suite, was that it’s a nigh-on obsolete format (Mini-DV) camera. Although it was worth the nut ache. I was really pleased with the footage.

I later found out, there is a black panther on the loose out there, so that clearly makes me a double-hard ba***rd.

This adventure was a true test of what I can achieve. I really found this one hard, both mentally and physically. In the dark, in the middle of nowhere, on your own.. It’s a hard place to be, and I nearly gave up a few times. If it wasn’t through the support of a very good group of friends, I wouldn’t be here typing this. Episode 2 would not exist.

Physically this challenge drained me, I was carrying a lot of water on my back, and that didn’t agree too well my my legs. I ended up spraining a tendon in my foot and I’ve been limping around like a wounded donkey for about 5 days now. I’m on the mend though, so that’s awesome.

All in all, I think I can say, I’ve found something I really enjoy. From adventuring, to editing, to release. It’s really a lot of fun.

Keeps me out of the pub.

Thanks again for your time, time is precious.

Dead Man Walking…

Steve DMWHi. I’m Steve, from Dead Man Walking. I’m the accidental documentary maker. With Berry Productions I’m often found acting or working on post-production sound.

Dead Man was stumbled upon, on an app – Snapchat. I started filming just to let everyone know where I was going, how I was doing. When I got back off that adventure, I sat and watched it back and thought ‘Hey, that’s pretty cool’. So I went out and got myself a cheap digital camera.

With that, Dead Man Walking was born, completely by accident.

The first episode was really fun to film and edit. It really got my creative juices flowing as I tried to work out a ‘format’ for the show, how it should look/feel etc.. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at ‘presenting’ so I just went for it!

The Hull – Hornsea challenge is really a test of endurance more than anything. The track is brutally bumpy and my bike had no suspension. The endurance part was made somewhat easier with something to take my mind off the muscle-splitting pain. The film. How should I vLog this bit? How will I edit this to make it look good? Segways – going from talking to cam, to voice-over.

I really wasn’t expecting a lot of people to take to it, as episode 1 falls in at just under 20 minutes long. People these days have very short attention spans, (including me) and I thought that’s where it’d fall.

Thankfully the response has been great! A lot of people seem to really dig it, which is amazing! Episode 2 is very nearly ready and I can’t wait to show you it.

Oh and by the way, I’m not trying to be Bear Grylls, he drinks his own wee and I’m not down with that.

Thanks very much for watching/reading this.

‘The Field’… The End?

Joe, Jade, Matt and Kane

Joe, Jade, Matt and Kane

It’s been 10 months. We’ve battled snow and sleet. Pushed on through wind and rain. Conquered heat-waves and glaring sunlight. No, we haven’t been doing some mad trek across the globe – this is just the mix of weather we have faced in England this last year as we’ve been making out newest film ‘The Field’.

We are now happy to say that, after all that time and all of the hard work that has been involved, ‘The Field’ is finally complete. Yes, in the last few days we fixed any discrepancies we had in the visuals and the sounds. We wrote our opening and end credits and we created our Berry Productions Logo to top and tail the film. Complete. Bliss.

Except of course for rendering. Anyone that has ever made a film in the digital world will understand what I mean by the term rendering. Anyone that doesn’t… it’s a bit like waiting for a bath to run. You really want this bath, in fact you can’t do anything until you have a bath. And as it turns out this bath is huge and takes a really long time to fill!

Callum and Ben

Callum and Ben

Rendering aside, we’re good to go! Go with what? Well first things first we have a Première of the film this Sunday 6th October in our hometown of Hull, East Yorkshire, UK. If you’re in or around Hull on that date, feel free to come along. Click on this lovely little link to take you to our Facebook event for more info. If you’re reading this past that date, we’ll be having another showing in Hull so please keep a check with us on Facebook or Twitter!

Now the hard work begins. Promoting our film is the next step and it’s a HUGE one. We’re going to hit all the major festivals and distributors. Anything to help get ‘The Field’ seen and hopefully put us a step closer to some funding for a feature film! Any help that anyone can offer in this department will be much appreciated!

And of course, please keep watching and sharing out Teaser Trailer on YouTube, help us get to 1000 views! There will be some interviews and clips from the film coming very soon so keep checking back with us!

‘The Field’ – Character Posters

Hull is a city in the UK that is often forgotten. We’re currently in the run-up for The City of Culture and, we are beginning to get there. There are some brilliant artists, musicians, comedians, dancers and, of course, actors, living within our little city. Some of those brilliant actors have been working hard with us on our current film ‘The Field’.

We have young actors, Jade Thrustle, Matthew Duncan and Kane Meakes – upcoming kids that in the years to come could potentially become brilliant at what they do. David Aston, a brilliant older actor, is on-board, as is Joanne Gallagher who has been cast in Eden End at Hull Truck Theatre in November. Then we have our own Callum Smith and Katy D’Arcy – they don’t class themselves as actors but they do a hell of a good job!

Here are a selection of character posters from ‘The Field’ showcasing some of Hull’s finest in, what we hope people will think to be, a great little film!

The Field Posters!

Time for a treat! Here are two posters from our newest film ‘The Field’. The young actor in these posters is Kane, who plays Jacob in the film. Hopefully with these posters we can excite, intrigue and make people want to see our film!

We’ve almost got it finished. 7 months or hard work has gone into making this film. There were set backs due to snow that put us completely off track and all of the post-production has been done by just two of us, so it’s been a long slog! It’s paid off though as it is looking and sounding amazing!

Let us know what you think of the posters and please spread the world about ‘The Field’. #DareToDoTheChallenge

Films that Inspired ‘The Field’

As we draw ever closer towards completing our newest and best ever shot film ‘The Field’, I’ve been thinking about the different films I’ve seen that have inspired our film. When I say inspired, I don’t mean the story. This is OUR story. Inspired to us means a general feel for the film.

Back of pub

‘The Field’ is about a bunch of happy-go-lucky kids who come across something mysterious and potentially very dangerous. We have tried to mix elements of comedy with mystery and horror. Don’t be mistaken in thinking that this is a kids film just because its main characters are children. Although it has that childhood element to it, it is filled with some very scary scenes and quite a few jumps! But we did take inspiration from a number of kids films.

Here are some of the films we have taken inspiration from:

The GooniesGoonies

A group of kids embark on a wild adventure after finding a pirate treasure map. ‘The Goonies’ is one of those classic films that we all loved as kids, and still do now. It is the characters, the relationships between the children that make this film great. We’ve tried to capture a similar feel – have the children childish and fun, and work brilliantly together.

E.T.E.T.

Boy finds alien, boy befriends alien, boy helps alien get back home. We all cry. Another Spielberg classic, ‘E.T.’ , like ‘The Goonies’, captures that essence of childhood and the relationships between them. ‘E.T.’ has all the heart and emotions that we have tried to recreate between our characters and the characters they meet on their journey. Plus we have a great bike riding scene – only ours don’t fly!

The VillageVillage

The population of a small village, surrounded by woods, discover the truth about the creatures that live within the trees. M. Night Shyamalan brings us horror in a tense intriguing story. It is this feeling that we have tried to portray. We love films that don’t show too much. In ‘The Village’ you never quite see the monsters which makes it even scarier. We love being scared and have tried to portray that same sense of confusion and horror!

Super 8Super 8

A group of friends witness a train crash and investigate subsequent unexplained events in their small town. J.J. Abrams brings us another group of children, on a journey of discovery. Charles in ‘Super 8’ is a bit of a knob. Max in ‘The Field’ is a bit of knob too! Inspiration from ‘Super 8’ comes again from the relationships and the mystery that the children encounter.

There are more films that have inspired us I’m sure, but these are the ones that I can think of right now (it is 11pm and I’m very tired!). These films are great, our film is hopefully going to be great too! I’m not saying our film is going to be anywhere near as good as these – as these have had big budgets and huge crews. But I am going to say that ‘The Field’ will intrigue, will make you laugh, will make you scared, will make you jump and will leave questioning… “What if…?”
