Wonderful – Day 1

Wonderful, Berry Productions

29th May 2015

After months of planning; script writing, casting, shot listing, storyboarding, location scouting and costume design and creation to name but a few, we were on set of our first scene for our new short film ‘Wonderful’. And what a scene it was.

We were filming what was possibly the hardest scene in the film to shoot! Typical!

Our scene takes place in our villains evil lair. For this location, we approached The Deep in Hull, which is one of the UK’s largest aquariums, home to sharks, penguins, jellyfish and more!

The Deep, Hull, Wonderful

They were absolutely brilliant and more than happy to help us out. We had access to three different areas in The Deep after closing hours, and the staff were so helpful, we cannot thank them enough!

With our brilliant costume maker, Elli, on set, along with our great make-up artist, Andy, and our amazing crew (including Carl, Ben and Neil), we were all set to go.

Our first scene took place in front of the giant shark tanks. So not only did our actors (David Aston and Richie Donaldson) have to perform for us, we needed the sharks to do well too!

As they seemed to swim in constant circles around the tank we had to time the action to start just as our finned friends passed the front of the tank. With a three camera set up, we made sure we captured the action piece from every angle. Everything went smoothly… success!

We then filmed in the Cool Seas area, which is a dark room that has some great neon lighting and an amazing jelly fish tank! A true villains lair!

Wonderful, The Deep, Berry Productions

Time was against us as we only had a limited time in the room so we didn’t manage to get it all completed. Stress levels rising! It was getting late in the evening too…

Onwards to the final area to film – a really impressive tunnel of colour changing lights! A great moment for our hero, David, to stride through the tunnel, as we slid backwards on our dolly.

We were able to finish everything in this area, much to our relief. By now it was about 9pm and everyone was starting to droop! It was time to call it a night.

We got some brilliant footage and was a great start to our film. Yes, we would have to return (if The Deep would have us!) but it was better to get it all right, rather than rush.

Time for us, and the sharks, to get some rest!

A New Year… A New Film!

2014 seems to have passed pretty quickly. Is it simply because we’re getting old? If that’s the case then by the time we’re 60 all we’ll have to do is blink and another year will have gone by! Whatever the reason, there’s no stopping this year coming to a close. And when I think back and realise that the last short film we made was in January it gets me worried. That means it’s almost been a year since we last made anything!

Of course that’s not true. We’ve done some music videos and we’ve all been involved in our own personal and work projects. But I am now itching get a new film made! And, just as it happens, that’s exactly what we’re going to do!

The script for our new venture is written (save a few tweaks here and there) and we’ve already got the beast cast! I’m not going to give away anything about the plot just yet, but in early January we’re going to be shooting some teaser poster images for the film and then (hopefully!) by the end of Jan we’ll be all systems go!

We’ve got some great actors working with us on this project:

David

David Aston is taking the lead role in our new film! We worked with him on ‘The Field’ and ‘The New Family Corporation’.

Jo

Jo Gallagher is back working with us again for our new project. We worked with her on ‘The Field’ and ‘New Family Corporation’.

Richie Donaldson is new to Berry Production, but we’ve seen what he can do and really like his style! It will be great to work with him!

We’ve come a long way since our last film in terms of honing our craft and filling our houses up with better equipment. This is going to be a big leap in terms of quality for us and we’re really excited to get started!

Please keep checking with us for updates and keep on supporting indie film!

The Field on DVD – available now!

Front CoverBack CoverWe recently completed our 45 minute, zero budget film ‘The Field’, made in and around our home city of Hull and with a cast and crew from the area too! We’re happy to announce that the DVD’s are now available for you to relive the challenge (if you’ve already seen it) or dare to do the challenge (if you haven’t seen it)!

The Field DVD

……………………………………………..

It took us a year to complete ‘The Field’ from the first day of filming and, with only a handful of people in our crew, it was quite a challenge! The entire film was financed from our own pockets (in other words… not much at all) and had a LOT of  help from local businesses, friends and family members – all of which we are incredibly grateful for!

We’ve packed the DVD’s full of extra features and a couple of our other recent short films! We’ve been looking forward to getting the DVD’s completed so we can get the film we all worked so hard on seen by all of you lovely people!

If you would like to buy a copy of ‘The Field’  please use the ‘Buy Now’ button below. The DVD’s cost £5.00 each (plus postage and packaging) and every penny will go towards funding our next film.  If you live near us in Hull and would rather collect your DVD, you can use the contact form below and we will get back to you ASAP.

Time to get Animated!

TrumpersA few months ago I was drawing with my kids, Ruby and Chance, when we started making a bunch of crazy little characters. The kids did most of the designing of the characters, drawings and choosing their names. We then made them into the awesome top trumps cards and called them ‘Trumpers’.

This got me thinking about an idea for a cartoon series still named ‘Trumpers’. Characters and storyline ideas created by kids, updated by the masterful team at Berry Productions to make them fun filled episodes full of crazy creatures with some great stories. So, with this in mind, we have been coming up with ideas for the show. ‘Trumpers’ is going to be in the format of a sketch show – like The Fast Show. Hopefully we’ll make it appeal to young and old, so it’s a kids cartoon that parents will enjoy watching as well!

We’ve been making some test animations to see if we can nail the format. Here’s a little dancing dragon named Drogo (yes, a Game of Thrones reference!). This is our first proper test. There are still many changes that we need to make. We hope to get the animation to flow a little more smoothly. The drawing style was just a quick little think I did – it doesn’t reflect the style that ‘Trumpers’ will be.

It would be great to know what you think and any ideas you may have to help us with our series. We’ll be posting more updates soon so please keep posted!

Reed Short Film Competition…

It’s November, it’s getting colder and colder with more chances of rain, snow and sleet. Of course this means that we are about to shoot a new film! Hooray! The old Berry curse of filming in the cold strikes again! Not our fault this time though, as we are making a short film for the Reed Short Film Competition, which is currently open and closes on 22nd January, 2014. What is Reed Short Film you may ask? It’s an annual competition by Reed Recruitment Agency to make a 3 minute film based on a theme. This years theme is ‘Family Business’. Two years ago we made ‘The Wife and I…‘ for the competition and made it into the top 30 out of over 500 entrants. So this year we are hoping to even better!

We have our screenplay written and the majority of locations sorted. I’m not going to tell you the story – don’t want to spoil it – but I can tell you the cast involved. We’ve been working with some amazing actors and actresses in the last few years, all from Hull and surrounding areas, and wanted to get as many of these brilliant people involved and all have signed up for the film!

New FamilyNew Family 3New Family 4 New Family 1 New Family 2

The short film was written by myself (Joseph Monahan) and will be directed by me and Callum Smith. Callum will also work on the musical score to the film.

It’s a great story that we have come up with – if you’re a fan of the Black Mirror series by Charlie Brooker then you might just like this one!

We’re currently sourcing all of our locations and props etc, ready to begin filming in the next couple of weeks and we’re all looking forward to getting our teeth into it!

Below is the film we made for the competition 2 years ago. It was called ‘The Wife and I…’ and the theme was ‘The Boss’. We have come a long way since making this short so, if you like ‘The Wife and I…’, get ready for something bigger and better!

Reed Short Film Competition… we’re coming for you!

Submitting ‘The Field’ to Film Festivals…

£114.12 down and an eternal wait of 6 months. It’s festival submission time again! Hooray!

We have just submitted our latest film ‘The Field’ to three film festivals, one in the UK and two in the States.

Festival1In the UK we have submitted to the British Independent Film Festival which takes place in  Leicester Square in London. The great thing about this festival, and what attracted us to it, is that there are a number of awards presented – not just best film or best director(s) as is usually the case. This festival also has best actor and actress and best young actor and actress. As we have had some pretty amazing performances from both our young and… ahem… ‘older’ actors we thought we’d give it a shot, giving the people who gave us their time for free to work with us a chance for some glory! It also focuses on British, independent talent. There is huge press coverage and, being in the UK, we could easily attend!

In the US we submitted to The San Francisco International Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival. The winner of best short film at the San Francisco Festival get’s considered for an Academy Award nomination – far reaching I know, but it would be great to say we were even in this category would be amazing! The Seattle Festival considers our film  a feature and has a number of great awards and even cash prizes. Both publicize the hell out of the films involved and both gain a lot of interest from industry specialists and distributors. Our man Ben Wade is in America too, so potentially could get his arse there to represent us!

Festival2

Of course we are not guaranteed to get into any of these festivals. We could get a big fat rejection and be out of pocket with nothing to show from it. And these are only the first three festivals we’ve gone for – there are a lot more we’ll be submitting to in the next few months so potentially our pockets could be not only empty, but end up sucking us into a black abyss of no return. On the other hand our film could do brilliantly in one or more festivals and pave the way for that feature we’re planning!

Only time will tell. 6 months in fact, as we don’t know if we’ll even get in to the festivals until April next year. So watching this space is a must!

‘The Field’… The End?

Joe, Jade, Matt and Kane

Joe, Jade, Matt and Kane

It’s been 10 months. We’ve battled snow and sleet. Pushed on through wind and rain. Conquered heat-waves and glaring sunlight. No, we haven’t been doing some mad trek across the globe – this is just the mix of weather we have faced in England this last year as we’ve been making out newest film ‘The Field’.

We are now happy to say that, after all that time and all of the hard work that has been involved, ‘The Field’ is finally complete. Yes, in the last few days we fixed any discrepancies we had in the visuals and the sounds. We wrote our opening and end credits and we created our Berry Productions Logo to top and tail the film. Complete. Bliss.

Except of course for rendering. Anyone that has ever made a film in the digital world will understand what I mean by the term rendering. Anyone that doesn’t… it’s a bit like waiting for a bath to run. You really want this bath, in fact you can’t do anything until you have a bath. And as it turns out this bath is huge and takes a really long time to fill!

Callum and Ben

Callum and Ben

Rendering aside, we’re good to go! Go with what? Well first things first we have a Première of the film this Sunday 6th October in our hometown of Hull, East Yorkshire, UK. If you’re in or around Hull on that date, feel free to come along. Click on this lovely little link to take you to our Facebook event for more info. If you’re reading this past that date, we’ll be having another showing in Hull so please keep a check with us on Facebook or Twitter!

Now the hard work begins. Promoting our film is the next step and it’s a HUGE one. We’re going to hit all the major festivals and distributors. Anything to help get ‘The Field’ seen and hopefully put us a step closer to some funding for a feature film! Any help that anyone can offer in this department will be much appreciated!

And of course, please keep watching and sharing out Teaser Trailer on YouTube, help us get to 1000 views! There will be some interviews and clips from the film coming very soon so keep checking back with us!

‘The Field’ – Character Posters

Hull is a city in the UK that is often forgotten. We’re currently in the run-up for The City of Culture and, we are beginning to get there. There are some brilliant artists, musicians, comedians, dancers and, of course, actors, living within our little city. Some of those brilliant actors have been working hard with us on our current film ‘The Field’.

We have young actors, Jade Thrustle, Matthew Duncan and Kane Meakes – upcoming kids that in the years to come could potentially become brilliant at what they do. David Aston, a brilliant older actor, is on-board, as is Joanne Gallagher who has been cast in Eden End at Hull Truck Theatre in November. Then we have our own Callum Smith and Katy D’Arcy – they don’t class themselves as actors but they do a hell of a good job!

Here are a selection of character posters from ‘The Field’ showcasing some of Hull’s finest in, what we hope people will think to be, a great little film!

The Field – Teaser Trailer

“This is Old Joe’s Field… and this is where the challenge takes place!” – Max, The Field.

To tease is something that all humans do. We tease each other in the playground at school. We tease dogs by pretending to throw them that invisible stick. And we tease in film, hence the teaser trailer! It’s not a full trailer that reveals characters and plot details. It is just a quick taste, a short glimpse at what is to come!

So here is our little teaser. Our full trailer will be coming soon. The actual film will be hitting the festival route so won’t be online to watch for some time – but fear not, we’ll be providing other ways for people to watch it, including some DVD give-aways!

Please help get our teaser trailer out into the world by sharing with every person you know! Please use the hashtag #TheField and/or #DareToDoTheChallenge

Thanks to all your continuing support, I hope you enjoy and please leave us a comment and let us know what you think!

The Field – Post-Production

“My three Ps: passion, patience, perseverance. You have to do this if you’ve got to be a filmmaker” – Robert Wise

We’re coming to the final stretch on our newest film ‘The Field’. During production we had lots of people working with us, but now, in that important post-production stage, there are just two of us doing all of the work. We’re both fanatical perfectionists when it comes to our films, so we throw everything into it.

Berry Productions

Production on The Field began in December 2012. Now August 2013, this year has just disappeared on us! Finally however, we are at that point where we can see the end of the tunnel! We are putting the final touches to the film – editing the last of the sound effects and music, then moving onto the colour grading and a few visual effects.

It’s been a long slog. There have been just two of us working on the post-production when we could have done with about ten! Luckily, myself (Joe Monahan) and Callum Smith work really well together and are usually in tune when it comes to ideas.

Another week or so and the film will be ready. We’ve managed to capture a great mix of horror, mystery, adventure and comedy in the film, which hopefully will give it quite a unique feel!

We’ve got some cool posters, a trailer in the making and some interviews coming soon so watch this space!
